Loss of Electricity and CT homeowners insurance

As we have seen this week from the wrath of Hurricane Sandy, power outages that last for days can be terribly inconvenient, and with the cold weather looking like it’s here for another season, no power means no heat, and no heat does not bode well for the health of those effected.  If you’re then wondering about your CT homeowners insurance and how that would factor in to helping you get back on your feet after a long period without power, you must first consider the nature of the power outage.

For example, your coverage is much more likely to kick in if your power outage is a direct result of a problem that occurred on your property-  for instance a tree falling on power lines going into your home, or lightening striking the roof. If the outage is the result of a widespread blackout, then your policy may not take effect.

For your reference, here are some instances in how CT homeowners insurance would come into play:

1. Loss of food to spoilage:

Your standard policy will likely cover food spoilage if the outage occurred as a result of direct damage to the home. The ruined food from the lack of electricity to your home, as well as the damage incurred in your home, would be part of one claim.

2. Hotel anyone while we don’t have power at home?

A great thing about CT home insurance the “additional living expenses,” benefit, which will pay for a hotel room or other suitable living area until you can move back into your home.

3. Gadgets and Gizmos are done.

Lightening is especially harmful not only to you and your family, but the technology inside your home.  Many electronics can be significantly damaged or destroyed from a lightening strike, and the cost to replace them is generally covered under your CT home insurance.

4. And there goes your frozen pipes…

Burst water pipes from cold temperatures (resulting from a lack of electricity to power the heating system) will be covered. Taking some simple steps before the harsh winter sets in can end up saving you in the long run, because anyone with burst pipes will tell you, it isn’t a fun experience.

Hopefully these few scenarios have you better versed in the connection between power outages and your CT homeowners insurance.  If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to call Paradiso Insurance, we are here for you!
